If you’ve spent any amount of time exploring the sun-scorched open world of Teyvat’s Sumeru region, you’ve probably stumbled across the Crimson Clover Desert at least once. I spent three whole afternoons wandering its dunes last month, missing half the hidden puzzles and getting chased by Eremite camps more times than I can count, before I finally mapped out all the best spots and tricks to make exploration way easier. I even accidentally stumbled into a quicksand pit twice because I was too busy staring at a distant chest I wanted to grab. This guide pulls together everything I learned, so you don’t have to waste hours wandering lost under the scorching sun like I did.
Key Hazards to Watch for in the Crimson Clover Desert
The first thing you’ll notice when you step into the region is the unforgiving heat mechanic that works very differently from other desert areas in the game. Your heat exhaustion meter will fill gradually whenever you’re in direct sunlight, and once it hits 100%, you’ll lose 5% of your max HP every 2 seconds, even if you’re standing still. That adds up fast if you’re far from a shaded spot or oasis.
You also need to watch out for Eremite ambush spots tucked behind large dunes and rock formations. These groups spawn without warning, and most include a healer that can make fights drag on far longer than you want, draining your food and potion supplies in the process. The third most common hazard is hidden quicksand pits that look identical to regular sand from a distance. Step on one, and you’ll be pulled down slowly, taking 10% HP damage per second and losing 20% of your stamina if you don’t escape quickly.
The good news is you can counter almost all these hazards with a little preparation. I’ve tested every trick out there, and these are the three that work best:
- Carry at least 10 cooling potions in your inventory at all times, especially if you're planning to hunt for collectibles far from oases
- Use Dendro characters to summon grass or lotus heads for temporary shade that drops your heat meter by 30% in 2 seconds
- Stick to the shaded sides of rock formations whenever you're moving between points, as direct sunlight makes the heat meter fill twice as fast
I used to skip carrying cooling potions because I thought they were a waste of inventory space, but after getting stuck in the middle of the dunes with a full heat meter and no shade nearby, I never leave home without them now.
Top Collectible Spots to Prioritize On Your First Visit
The main collectible in the region is crimson clover seeds, used for ascending several popular Dendro characters. A lot of players waste hours wandering the open dunes looking for these, but 90% of the region's crimson clover seeds grow within 10 feet of small rock outcroppings, so you can cut your farming time in half just by sticking to those spots. The highest concentration of seeds is near the northern oasis, where you can grab 12 seeds in less than 5 minutes if you follow the edge of the rock line.
There are also 27 hidden chests scattered across the area: 17 common, 8 precious, and 2 luxurious. The first luxurious chest is hidden behind a breakable rock wall just north of the central teleporter, and you’ll need a Geo character or claymore user to break it open. The second is at the bottom of a small quicksand pit near the western edge – don’t worry, this one doesn’t do damage, it just teleports you down to the cave where the chest is stored.
If you collect all 40 crimson clover seeds in one single run, you’ll unlock a secret achievement that gives you 30 primogems. I missed 12 seeds on my first run because I didn’t check the small caves tucked under the larger dunes, so make sure you peek into every small opening you see, even if it looks too small to hold anything.
Simple Puzzle Solutions You Won’t Find in In-Game Hints
The Crimson Clover Desert has 6 total puzzles, and half of them have almost useless in-game hints that leave most players stuck for 10+ minutes each. The most frustrating one is the sun and moon symbol puzzle near the western edge. The in-game hint only says “match the cycle” but doesn’t explain that adjusting your in-game time to the correct hour is required to activate it in the first place. Set your clock to 2AM, and the symbols will light up so you can interact with them in the correct order.
Another common head-scratcher is the clover pattern tile puzzle near the southern oasis. Most players step on the tiles in random order trying to guess the solution, but it’s actually much simpler than that. You just need to step on the tiles in the order of the clover’s leaves, starting from the smallest one to the largest. If you mess up, you have to wait 30 seconds for it to reset, so take your time and count the leaves before you start.
Solving all 6 puzzles unlocks a secret teleporter right in the center of the desert that cuts your travel time across the region by 70%. It’s 100% worth the effort, even if you don’t care about the chest rewards. I use that teleporter every week when I come back to farm clover seeds, and it saves me at least 20 minutes per run.
Recommended Team Comps for Smooth Exploration
You don’t need a team of maxed 5-star characters to explore the desert easily. I ran the whole area on my first visit with a team of level 60 4-star characters and had zero issues, so don’t feel like you have to grind for top tier characters first. Anemo characters with crowd control abilities are super helpful for clearing out groups of Eremites fast, so characters like Sucrose or Heizou are great picks if you have them built even a little bit.
You also want at least one healer that can heal over time, like Barbara or Kokomi. Heat damage ticks constantly if you let your meter fill up, so having consistent passive healing means you don’t have to waste food or healing items every few minutes. If you have a Dendro character like Collei or Tighnari, that’s even better, since you can summon shade on the go to drop your heat meter whenever you need to.
The only character type you don’t really need here is Cryo. There are no ice-based puzzles or enemies in the region, so you can swap that slot out for a character you’re trying to level up if you want. I brought my unbuilt Fischl along on my first run just to get her some XP, and she didn’t slow me down at all.
At the end of the day, exploring the Crimson Clover Desert doesn’t have to be a frustrating, hour-long slog full of lost stamina and missed collectibles. If you follow the tips in this guide, you’ll be able to clear all the puzzles, collect all the seeds, and grab every chest in less than two hours, even if you’re a relatively new player. I still head back to the area once a week to farm seeds for my character ascensions, and these tricks still save me 30+ minutes every single run. Don’t forget to stop by the eastern oasis on your way out, too – there’s a hidden NPC there that gives you a free 4-star artifact if you bring her 3 crimson clover seeds.
